About Lucca
Capital of Tuscany, Lucca is a city with an ancient history, but also a lively cultural center full of important events. Famous for its perfectly preserved sixteenth-century city walls, it is characterized by its many precious monuments which reveal its past as the most important city of the Italian Middle Ages. Nicknamed the town of a hundred churches on account of its incredible number of places of worship, it is unique among city-states for having maintained its independence up until 1847. Historical circumstances demanded that Lucca fortify itself, and so its immense artistic and architectural heritage is ringed by a massive circuit of defensive walls. Lucca sits in the centre of the Lucca plain, a breathtaking landscape that was sculpted by the river Serchio and is dotted with medieval towns.
Places to visit
Other than the magnificent and intact circuit of walls, Lucca is renowned for its Roman amphitheatre converted into piazza dell’Anfiteatro by architect Lorenzo Nottolini. The Guinigi Tower is also one of the most known places to visit and one of the few surviving towers in Lucca, where on the top you can admire a view that stretches from the city to the surrounding hills. Other attractions are Piazza Napoleone, Palazzo Pfanner, San Michele church and of course the traditional cuisine, simple and that owes much to its humble agricultural origins and is based on seasonally available crops.
